What is a Twitter GIF downloader?
A Twitter GIF downloader saves the animated GIFs you see on X (formerly Twitter) as files on your device. It is needed because Twitter does not keep GIFs as GIFs: when someone posts a GIF, Twitter converts it into a short, silent MP4 that loops forever in the player. Long-press or right-click it and you will not find a Save image option, and even tools that grab the file only give you that MP4.
TwitterVideoDownloader.org handles both cases. Paste the post link and you can keep Twitter's original MP4, which is small and sharp, or turn it into a real animated .gif that works in chats, slides, forums and anywhere else a GIF is expected. The conversion runs inside your own browser, so the clip is never uploaded to us.
How to download a GIF from Twitter
- Copy the link of the post with the GIF. Tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link, or copy the address from your browser.
- Paste it into the box above and press Get GIF. Paste several links, one per line, to work on a batch.
- Wait a few seconds while it converts. The progress bar walks through three steps: reading the frames, building the color palette and encoding the GIF.
- Save it. Press Download .gif for the animated GIF, or Download original MP4 if you prefer the smaller video file.
GIF or MP4: which one should you keep?
Both files show the same animation, but they behave differently once they leave Twitter.
| Real .gif | Original MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Everywhere GIFs work: Discord, Slack, email, forums, slides, image editors | Video players, editing apps, phone galleries |
| File size | Larger (often 1–5 MB for a few seconds) | Small (usually under 1 MB) |
| Colors | Up to 256 colors per frame | Full color, exactly as uploaded |
| Loops automatically | Yes, in every viewer | Only in players that loop video |
If you want to repost a reaction GIF in a chat, the .gif is the safe choice. If you are archiving the clip or editing it, keep the MP4.
How the browser conversion works
Turning an X GIF into a .gif file normally means uploading it to a converter site. Here nothing leaves your device. Your browser downloads the MP4 directly from Twitter's CDN, plays it frame by frame on an invisible canvas, picks the best 256-color palette for the whole clip and encodes the frames into an animated GIF using a background worker, so the page stays responsive.
To keep files reasonable, the output is resized to at most 480 pixels wide, sampled at up to 20 frames per second and capped at 150 frames; very long loops get a lower frame rate rather than being cut short. The result panel shows the final resolution, frame count, frame rate, length and file size before you save.
Save several Twitter GIFs at once
Put up to 10 links in the box, one per line. Each post is checked and listed with its thumbnail and author, and each row gets two buttons: .gif converts that one and saves it, MP4 saves the original file. Download all as .gif (ZIP) converts every ready GIF one after another and hands you a single archive, which is handy when you are collecting reaction GIFs from a long thread.
Using your GIF on iPhone, Android and desktop
- iPhone: in Safari the GIF lands in Files → Downloads. Open it and use Save Image to put it in Photos, where it keeps animating in the Animated album.
- Android: the file is saved to Downloads and appears in your gallery; keyboards such as Gboard can then insert it into chats.
- Desktop: drag the .gif into Discord, Slack, Google Slides or an email; it plays everywhere without a video player.
What can't be saved
GIFs from protected accounts, deleted posts and suspended accounts are not public, so they cannot be fetched. Regular videos are not GIFs; if a post has a normal video with sound, use the Twitter Video Downloader to save it as MP4 in the quality you need.
Twitter GIF Downloader FAQs
What is a Twitter GIF downloader?
It is a tool that saves animated GIFs from posts on X (Twitter). Because Twitter stores GIFs as looping MP4 videos, a Twitter GIF downloader either gives you that MP4 or converts it back into a real .gif file. TwitterVideoDownloader.org offers both.
Why do Twitter GIFs download as MP4?
Twitter converts every uploaded GIF into a silent MP4 because video files are much smaller and load faster. That MP4 is what Twitter serves, so to get a .gif you have to convert it, which this tool does in your browser.
Is the Twitter GIF downloader free?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up and no limit on how many GIFs you save. The conversion uses your own device, so it costs nothing to run.
Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?
No. The MP4 comes directly from Twitter's CDN to your browser, and the GIF is created on your device. Our server only looks up where the file is stored.
Why is the .gif bigger than the MP4?
The GIF format stores every frame as a separate image with a limited palette, while MP4 uses modern video compression. A few seconds of animation that is 500 KB as MP4 can easily be 2–3 MB as a GIF.
Can I make the GIF bigger or smoother?
The converter keeps GIFs to 480 pixels wide and 20 frames per second so they stay shareable. If you need full resolution, download the original MP4, which keeps the exact size and frame rate of the upload.
Can I save GIFs from X on iPhone?
Yes. Open the site in Safari, paste the link, convert and tap Download .gif. The file goes to Files → Downloads, and from there Save Image adds it to Photos as an animated GIF.
Can I download a GIF from a reply or a quoted post?
Yes, as long as you copy the link of the post that actually contains the GIF. For a reply, open the reply itself and copy its link rather than the link of the thread.
